Re-evaluating Maqasid al-Shariah in the Anthropocene

Prof. Salma Rashid Al-Azhar University 2024-09-05

A critical review of Dr. Ahmad Hassan's recent publication, examining how the expanding framework of the higher objectives of Islamic law (Maqasid) can conceptually address modern ecological crises.

In his latest monograph, 'Foundations of Islamic Jurisprudence', Dr. Ahmad Hassan dedicates a pivotal chapter to the evolution of Maqasid al-Shariah.

Hassan's work is particularly salient when considering the ecological crisis. He argues convincingly that the preservation of life and property must inherently include the preservation of the biosphere.

This commentary seeks to extend Hassan's premise by proposing that environmental stewardship (Khilafah) is not merely a subset of property preservation, but a foundational objective in its own right.

Hassan's rigorous methodology provides a solid foundation for this argument.
